TOLEDO, Ohio — The Associated Press has called Ohio's governor's race for the incumbent Republican, Mike DeWine.
DeWine defeated former Dayton mayor Nan Whaley to win his second term in office.
DeWine, 75, was elected to his first term as governor in 2018. He previously served as Ohio attorney general, U.S. senator and lieutenant governor under Gov. George Voinovich.
A native of Yellow Springs, DeWine attended Miami University and then got his law degree from Ohio Northern University before beginning his career as an assistant county prosecutor in Greene County. His first elected post was Greene County Prosecutor.
Most of DeWine's term as governor was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic and he quickly gained national attention early in the crisis for his televised daily briefings with then-Health Director Dr. Amy Acton.

Whaley, 46, served as mayor of Dayton from 2014 to 2022. She defeated former Cincinnati mayor John Cranley for the Democratic nomination for governor in the primary.
Originally from Indiana, Whaley came to Ohio to attend the University of Dayton, where she earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry. She also has a master's degree in public administration from Wright State University.
Whaley initially ran for governor in a crowded early Democratic field in 2018. She dropped out of the race when front-runner -- and the eventual nominee -- Richard Cordray joined the race.
