TOLEDO, Ohio — Ohio State Representative Derek Merrin, a Republican, announced on Wednesday that he has launched a campaign for Ohio's 9th Congressional District.
He joins a long list of those trying to unseat longtime Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo).
“Ohio needs a proven conservative leader with a backbone who is able to defeat Marcy Kaptur and put our country back on the right path,” said Representative Merrin. “Growing up in Northwest Ohio, I have witnessed the broken policies pushed for decades by Marcy Kaptur and Joe Biden that repeatedly fail our community.”
WTOL 11 reached out to Kaptur for a statement on the latest filings for the 9th District.
“After great pressure from Washington and Columbus, the GOP has added another candidate to its March Primary. These are the same political power brokers who orchestrated failure after failure in the House of Representatives this year," Kaptur's campaign sent in response. "Congresswoman Kaptur remains focused on working across the aisle, getting Congress to work for all of the people, and on delivering real results for NW Ohio."
Wednesday was the final day to file to be on the November 2024 ballot.
A lot of familiar names are also running to become Lucas County commissioner following the retirement of Tina Skeldon Wozniak.
Democrats Anita Lopez, former Toledo mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson and Republican Tom Waniewski are all vying to be the commissioner.
