PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) - You can help fund a new playground in Port Clinton that would be all inclusive for everyone.
The playground will be built at Lakeview Park once the fundraising goal is met.
The proposed "Flagship Collaborative Play Place" in Port Clinton would be the first accessible-to-all playgrounds in northwest Ohio. It would be open to people of all ages and physical abilities.
The $600,000 inclusive playground would feature easy access ramps, lowering equipment, improved safety features and a hard rubber surface for those with wheelchairs.
It will also be easily accessible for elderly visitors who may be caring for the children at play.
"It's designed so all people no matter their walk of life, can come and play." says Tory Thompson, Director of Rural Outreach with the Ability Center of Ottawa County.
The park will not just be a place to play for those with disabilities, but a place to interact with people with and without disabilities as well.
It will also feature sensory activities for any park goers with Autism.
"If kids can come out at a young age and see other kids with disabilities, and maybe realize that they have things in common together, and create those friendships and develop those bonds." says Thompson, "Then they can socialize together and grow together."
Through donations from the Port Clinton service clubs, $150,000 have already been raised. The project will remain open until the full $600,000 goal is reached through private donations and grants.
The goal is to have a groundbreaking ceremony in September.
