TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - If you look inside the historic Toledo Edison Steam Plant in downtown Toledo, you'll notice lots of work needs to be done. But ProMedica plans to renovate the building and consolidate corporate headquarters for 700 people there, along with the adjacent Key Bank building.
"This is very important for us and we're really putting all of our efforts into making sure it's a success," said Robin Whitney, Promedica's vice president of property development.
New drawings show the $40 million project will be four stories tall. ProMedica says work areas will be open, energy efficient and feature natural lighting with cutting edge technology.
But two things still need to happen: Promedica must buy the steam plant from owner Dave Ball and the new market and historic tax credits must be secured.
"They're a pretty big component of the funding picture for us. It would definitely have impact on us if we weren't successful," said Whitney.
Then there's employee parking, which would be on the former federal building property in front of Promenade Park along Summit Street. It could be underground, above ground, or maybe a combination of the two.
The city owns the land.
"We plan to go to them with ideas before we would try to ask them to participate in a solution for us," said Whitney.
ProMedica says it wants to be a community partner in the revitalization of downtown Toledo.
If things fall into place, the rebirth of the plant could come during the summer of 2016.
