SYLVANIA, OH (WTOL) – Promedica has begun a marketing strategy involving green LED lights on top of its buildings. Unfortunately for those who reside near the buildings, the lights are extremely bright.
Jim and Nancy Ike moved across from Sylvania's Flower Hospital 11 years ago because of the hospital's park-like setting. Now, they say the place looks like Las Vegas, and it devalues their property.
"And it's just; your eyes are drawn to it. It's impossible not to notice it, it's like magnetic. And I found over time it was just giving me a headache." Jim Ike explained.
The Ikes say the inside of their home has a green glow.
Promedica put the lights up in February at Flower Hospital, Toledo Hospital, Bay Park Hospital and Saint Luke's Hospital as an easy way to remind the community which hospitals are part of the health system.
After hearing the concerns, the company's leaders met with residents in person, and dimmed the lights 50%.
"We're hoping that they understand that the 50 percent dimming was significant and is a compromise. And like I said, we want to always be a good neighbor. So we've offered some other things like making some remediation to their house, like with window coverings and things as well." said Promedica's VP of Operations Pam Jensen.
The Ikes appreciate the compromise, but they do not think it went far enough, They also question the legality of LED lights under city regulations. They presented petitions to Sylvania City Council on Monday night with 52 signatures calling for the lights to be taken down.
Promedica, on the other hand, says they received the necessary permits from the city, and the lights will stay on.
