(Toledo News Now) - Ottawa County Sheriff Stephen Levorchick says his office found that the school bomb threat calls were made using a smart phone application called SpoofCard, or Spoof. After subpoenaing the provider, police say they tracked the calls to Charles L. Tingler on Friday April 25.
Spoof disguises the caller's voice and the number they are calling from. Investigators were able to link all of the threatening calls to Tingler's phone.
Spoof is a website and phone app that allows a caller to pick a new fake number before they call. The website promises, "They'll never know it was you!"
The person answering the call will see the new number instead of the caller's number.
A caller can also add background noise to make it sound like the call is coming from a nightclub or near traffic. There is a setting to disguise the caller's voice.
Sixty minutes of calling from a fake number on SpoofCard costs $9.95.
