A chronology of the case of Manuel Gehring, who killed his two children in July 2003.
- July 4, 2003 -- Manuel Gehring, 14-year-old Sarah, and 11-year-old Philip attend July 4th fireworks in Concord.
- July 6 -- Gehring's ex-wife, Terri Knight, calls police after he fails to return the children.
- July 10 -- Police arrest Gehring in Gilroy, Calif.
- July 12 -- Authorities say the children probably were killed.
- July 18 -- Gehring indicted on two counts of first-degree murder. He was accused of shooting the children in New Hampshire the night of July 4 and burying them somewhere along Interstate 80 in the Midwest.
- July 15-22 -- Gehring, in custody, presumably helps try to find the bodies before his return to New Hampshire on July 22. Search continues along 700 miles of I-80 in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Indiana and Iowa.
- July 24 -- Search concentrated on rural grassy areas up to 10 miles on either side of I-80 from around the Indiana-Ohio state line to Joliet, Ill., about 190 miles.
- July 30 -- Police affidavit says Gehring admits he shot his children and buried them.
- Nov. 11 -- Gehring tells newspaper the FBI coerced his confession.
- Jan. 29, 2004 -- Gehring's lawyers say they may attempt an insanity defense.
- Feb. 19 -- Gehring kills himself in jail.
- July 2005 -- Knight and her husband travel along a 700-mile stretch of Interstate 80 in Ohio and four other states, trying to put the search for the children back in the spotlight.
