Toledo church open since 1875 is closing

St. Hedwig church in north Toledo is closing on September 1. The church is part of the Catholic Diocese and has been open since 1875.

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - The historic St. Hedwig church in north Toledo's Polish village is closing on September 1.

The church is part of the Catholic Diocese and has been open since 1875.

Members learned the news this past Sunday. Father Joseph Poggemeyer is the pastor of both St. Hedwig and St. Adelbert on Lagrange Street. The two churches were merged into a single parish two years ago.

People in the community agree it is sad news to receive.

"The history. There's a number of families that have been raised and attended that church, that school and so there's obviously a lot of memories, umm for the community in that way for the church," said Kim Kutcher of United North, an organization working with the church to come up with other ways to utilize the facility so that it doesn't completely shut down.

One of the options they are considering is turning the school portion of the property into housing for seniors.

The pastor did say the church will be available for special occasions such as weddings.
