TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The salaries of Toledo's mayor and members of City Council are now the subject of close scrutiny.
Every four years City Council appoints seven members of the community to sit on the Toledo Salary Review and Recommendation Commission. On Wednesday, that commission will hold its first meeting to take a closer look at what the mayor and Council make.
The mayor's annual salary is $122,400, which was reduced back in 2009 from $136,000 due to concerns about the economic downturn.
Salaries of City Council members have remained the same since 2001, at $27,500. The City Council president earns $4,500 more because of the additional responsibilities which go along with the position.
The economy is one factor to be taken into consideration as the commission makes recommendations for salaries of the mayor and City Council over the next four years.
The Toledo Salary Review and Recommendation Commission includes representatives from the local chamber, Hispanic chamber, local labor, the NAACP and Lucas County Republican and Democratic parties.
The commission will hold its first public meeting Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Government Center. The commission will hold additional meetings before passing on recommendations to City Council, which then votes on the recommendations to officially set the new salary levels.
