TPD gets new fleet of patrol cars

The Toledo Police Department is now the owner of a fresh new fleet of police cruisers.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Toledo Police Department is now the owner of a fresh new fleet of police cruisers.

TPD is the first department in the country to get the keys to these brand new 2014 Ford vehicles. The 117 new cars are sleek, sporty and packed will new features to give officers access to tools to keep people safe.

"From the ground up, these vehicles were made for the demanding work of police work, and for the type of duties that police officers have to conduct," said TPD Chief Derrick Diggs.

"They have upgraded suspensions, braking, cooling, all new handling and suspension systems for when we're in pursuits," said Officer Thomas Davis.

The new vehicles are a change from the Charges Toledo residents are used to seeing.

"Some of the cars had 200,000-plus [miles], and there's still some that still have to be replaced that have that amount of mileage," said Mayor Mike Bell. "But we're trying to catch up. I think this is a very, very important day."

The cars have new branding on the side, all blue light bars on the top, built-in double gun racks, twin spotlights, a more spacious cab, and higher seating for better visibility. Toledoans can expect to see them on the road in the next couple weeks.
