Tragic snowmobile accident on Devil's Lake leaves one dead

A snowmobile driver crashed into a pickup truck parked on Devil's Lake around 10:30 p.m. Saturday just after this year's Tip Up Festival had wrapped up.

LENAWEE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) - A snowmobile driver crashed into a pickup truck parked on Devil's Lake around 10:30 p.m. Saturday just after this year's Tip Up Festival had wrapped up.

The crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Daniel Wendell of Columbus, Ohio.

"Potentially, part of the problem could've been going too fast for his headlight," said James Anderson, Undersheriff for the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office. "Snowmobiles don't typically have a very strong headlight on them and it's difficult to see things at night."

Kim Picken, owner of the Manitou Bar and Grill at Devils Lake says it's very rare for something like this to happen here.

"It's very unfortunate, my thoughts go out to the family and friends of the gentleman that was involved in the accident," said Picken. "It's not a thing that happens every year here at the Tip Up Festival that we have, it's pretty safe."

Although another snowmobile was riding near Wendell, no witnesses to the crash have come forward. Investigators from the Lenawee County Sheriff's office say that it looks like speed was a factor in the crash.
