VERIFY: Do Ohioans need a license to grow marijuana?

Recreational marijuana will be legal on Dec. 7. So, can you grow your own hemp plants?

TOLEDO, Ohio — Ohio became the 24th state to legalize recreational marijuana during the November election. While many will take advantage of the new law when it goes into effect on Dec. 7, others will open up dispensaries and some will want to start growing their own hemp plants.

Do you need a license to grow your own marijuana?

Tom Haren, the spokesperson for the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol, said every dispensary, growing facility, testing lab and processor operating in Ohio will have to be licensed by the state's department of commerce.

For the average person though, "Issue 2 does not require licensing from any regulatory authority to cultivate up to six marijuana plants per adult," Haren said.

While you can grow your own marijuana plants, it still isn't legal until Dec. 7.

The law's implementation will also affect criminal penalties associated with the possession of marijuana.

"Up to two and a half ounces of marijuana in plant form or up to 15 grams in extract form go away," Haren said.

That 15 grams of extract would be the rule when it comes to edibles.

Haren said other state's regulations were helpful in shaping the regulations for Issue 2.
