VERIFY: Under state law, can you bring marijuana into Ohio from another state?

Here's what the state law says and what you need to know about the federal law.

OHIO, USA — Michigan voters decided to pass marijuana legalization in 2018, welcoming those in Ohio to purchase just a state over. It is no secret that many from the Buckeye state go to Michigan to buy weed.

But now that Ohio passed a similar law, under state law, can you bring weed into Ohio from another state?

Let's VERIFY.

WTOL 11 spoke to the University of Toledo Senior Lecturer Brandon Cohen.

"It's a growing industry," Cohen said. "The research suggests it's going to be worth over $100 billion within the next three years in the United States."

While there have been bills to legalize marijuana at a national level, it is still up to states to decide, for now.

"You could buy marijuana legally in Michigan and from Michigan come into Ohio, and Ohio wouldn't have any problem with it, but the federal government regulates interstate commerce so anything coming from Michigan to Ohio is technically interstate," Cohen said.

That means yes, you can have weed in Ohio from another state, as long as it's under the allowed limit of 2.5 ounces.

However, it is still prohibited under federal law. The Controlled Substance Act does not allow people to bring weed from state to state, which means you also cannot fly with it.

If you were to bring weed from Michigan and Ohio and get pulled over by the Drug Enforcement Agency or by the FBI, that could be a different story.
