What we can VERIFY about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump

Our VERIFY team looked into claims and questions surrounding the shooting that circulated online in the hours following the attack.

TOLEDO, Ohio —

Hundreds of claims and questions are circulating after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Let's VERIFY what we do know about the shooting and the suspect, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

THE SOURCES

WHAT WE FOUND

The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, which is about 50 miles south of Butler, where the former president held his rally on Saturday.

A quick search of Pennsylvania's voter registration records show that Crooks was a registered Republican, but had never voted in a federal election before because of his age.

However, according to the Federal Election Commission, he did donate $15 to ActBlue, a nonprofit online fundraising platform for Democrats, in January 2021.

A public records search on The Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania shows Crooks did not have any criminal history.

As of now, the FBI believes Crooks acted alone, but is still investigating if there were any co-conspirators.

So, how did Crooks get so close to the former president?

That is still being investigated, but according to CNN, a spokesperson from the Secret Service stated that agents did not sweep the building the shooter was on and that local law enforcement was supposed to be posted in that vicinity.

Following the incident, the FBI searched Crooks' car and home and found "suspicious devices" that have been sent to the FBI lab for further analysis.

CBS News confirmed those devices were basic bomb making materials.

What about the rumors circulating that former President Trump requested additional security for his rally, but was denied by the Secret Service?

In a statement, the Secret Service denied those rumors, saying they recently "added protective resources and capabilities to the former President's security detail."

Finally, the most asked question is: why did this happen?

The FBI said it is still in the early stages of the investigation and have not tracked down a motive yet.

Agents also recovered Crooks' cell phone and have been examining his electronic devices.
