TOLEDO, Ohio (WTOL) - A west Toledo community is still searching for answers after a beloved store clerk was gunned down and his killer remains on the loose. Neighbors are rallying together to help his family, but also to fight crime.
Bassam Kanouh, known as Sam, was gunned down at the Lewis Carryout in west Toledo Thursday night.
Kanouh's car remains in the parking lot of the carryout, now covered with roses. His funeral was held at noon on Sunday at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo in Perrysburg.
Sam had only worked at Lewis Carryout for six months, but touched the lives of customers. A growing memorial at the store features many messages of love. Friends and family say Kanouh was always there to lend a hand.
A fund has been set up at Fifth Third Bank to help cover expenses -- and a jar holds donations to help the Kanouh family on the counter of the carryout.
A sign above the collection jar at the carryout announces a special Blockwatch meeting to discuss Sam's murder and how to rid the area of what some say is rampant crime.
Kristen Dilworth and Harry Hager both support greater community involvement with Blockwatch. "People around here look out for each other a lot. If there's a Blockwatch, a lot of people (will be) happy with that."
Residents are now inspired to make the area safer because of the popular clerk's death.
