Wonder Bread to return to store shelves, Northwood bakery remains closed

Wonder Bread will soon return to store shelves, but that does not mean the Northwood factory that used to make the product will be reopening.

NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) - Wonder Bread will soon return to store shelves, but that does not mean the Northwood factory that used to make the product will be reopening.

Flower Foods, which bought Wonder Bread from Hostess after the company filed for bankruptcy, has announced the bread brand will be back on store shelves this week, reaching 77 percent of the U.S. population. The initial rollout includes stores in the American south and east coast. However, Flower has not said when Wonder Bread could return to northwest Ohio stores.

Still, news of Wonder Bread's return has some people hoping the trucks will start moving again.

"It's wonderful for everyone to get their jobs back. It would be awesome," said Priscilla Flores.

The Northwood Wonder Bread factory shut down when the company declared bankruptcy in November. Flower Foods says it does not currently have any plans to reopen the shuttered bakery, but hopes consumer demand will lead to increased production.

"It would be good if they open that plant again so that they would make new jobs, and the bread would be local - wouldn't have to travel far," said Terrance Allen.
