TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - After more than 10 years in the making, Woodward High School broke ground on Wednesday for its new football field and athletic stadium. It's a grassy area now, but soon it will have a $1.1 million stadium.
Currently, Woodward football and track runners have home games that are technically away games. They practice in the grassy area, but will soon be able to compete there.
Voters approved a ballot issue in the early 2000s allowing the district to build 44 new schools, while setting aside money for each high school stadium for upgrades.
The entire school was in attendance for the special ceremony. School leaders spoke, along with community members and former players, saying this was a community effort.
"We have a culture and a climate change here. The students are excited to be here. The community needs this. Woodward is probably one of the nicest buildings in all of north Toledo, and this just finishes it," said principal Jack Renz.
"This is something that we've waited on when I was playing here, and then all the people that was before me. This is something that we always talked about," said Bryant Robinson, former Woodward athlete and NFL retiree.
