TOLEDO, Ohio — The April 8 total solar eclipse that we will experience in the Toledo region has prompted several local schools and universities to cancel classes so their students can spend the day experiencing the historic event.
On that day a total solar eclipse will cast the shadow of the moon on a narrow path across the Earth with the direct path of totality across northern Ohio. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun.
Such an event is brief and rare. For most areas in northern Ohio the time in totality will average just under three minutes. Another total solar eclipse won't pass through Ohio until 2099, so you may never have a chance to view this rare event in this area again.
