Battle of I-75: History, what's on the line, how to watch

The Rockets and Falcons renew their bitter rivalry on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Doyt Perry Stadium at 7 p.m.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Editor's note: The above video is from last season's Battle of I-75.

A year of bragging rights is on the line as Toledo and Bowling Green football get together again for the Battle of I-75.

It's one of the most historic rivalries, not just in northwest Ohio, but in college football. The two universities are separated by just a mere 25 miles.

The two programs will get together again on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at Doyt Perry Stadium to add another chapter to this bitter feud.

Here's everything you need to know as the Rockets and Falcons prepare to go head-to-head.

History of the rivalry

Tuesday's meeting will be the 88th meeting all-time between the two programs, with the first matchup of this historic rivalry coming in 1919. Toledo went on to beat Bowling Green, 6-0.

The Rockets hold a slight edge in the series and the slightest edge you could have. The series stands at 42-41-4. Toledo dominated the rivalry from 2010-18, winning nine straight games over BG.

The two universities used to battle for the Peace Pipe Trophy until the Battle of I-75 Trophy was introduced in 2011. Toledo holds onto the Peace Pipe Trophy as the final winner of the trophy in 2010.

What's on the line this season?

Toledo comes into the game as a 10-point favorite but as is the case with any rivalry, you can throw all of that out the window.

Last season, Bowling Green went on the road and beat the Rockets in an all-time thriller, 42-35, as snow blanketed the Glass Bowl. The win granted the Falcons bowl eligibility for the first time since 2015.

As is the case with any rivalry, pride and bragging rights are on the line. BGSU hopes to make it two in a row over UT, but the Rockets are looking to avenge last season's loss.

Toledo has already locked their spot in the upcoming Mid-American Conference championship game. Meanwhile, the Falcons are already bowl-eligible for the second straight season.

The coaches' takes

"It's what college football's all about," said Toledo head coach Jason Candle. "It has the feel of a high school rivalry in the sense that it's so close, the communities are mixed and it's in your face, it's hard to avoid."

"We talk about this every day. This is a big game for both programs," said Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler. "Both teams are working 365 days a year to play in this and perform well. It's an exciting rivalry game and that's what makes college football awesome."
