Toledo women's basketball knocks off Michigan for second straight season

The Rockets beat Michigan 69-46 at Savage Arena for their second consecutive win over the Big Ten opponent.

TOLEDO, Ohio — For the second straight season, the University of Toledo women's basketball team is victorious over the University of Michigan.

The Rockets took a 19-point lead into halftime en route to a dominating 69-46 win over the Wolverines in front of a raucous crowd of over 7,082 at Savage Arena, a regular-season record. Toledo led by as many as 26 points in the game.

Quinesha Lockett led the way with a game-high 20 points. Sophia Wiard also added 14 points and five assists. Sammi Mikonowicz, a Rossford High School graduate, finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Rockets were aided by a season-high nine three-pointers. They also forced 19 turnovers from the Wolverines.

"The effort we had on both ends was what you had to have to beat a really good team like them," said Toledo head coach Tricia Cullop.

UT's win was seen by a national audience on CBS Sports Network, the first nationally televised regular-season game in program history.

"What an amazing feeling," said Cullop. "I haven't had that kind of electricity in this building since we won the NIT. It was awesome to feel it again and I hope it's not the last time we feel it this year."

"Nothing better than playing in Savage Arena with that many people," said Wiard. "The fans are amazing, they show out every single day, but this was definitely a different feeling."

Last season, Toledo beat Michigan 71-68 on the road. The Wolverines were ranked No. 14 in the country at the time.

The Rockets' next game will be at home on Sunday against Loyola Maryland at 2 p.m.
