COLUMBUS, Ohio — Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith played in just his eighth game at Ohio State and he's already in the record books.
Smith entered Saturday's game with 623 receiving yards, 25 yards shy of Cris Carter's freshman record of 648 yards set in 1984.
The freshman receiver surpassed that record with an 18-yard grab during the third quarter of Saturday's game against Penn State.
Smith had a relatively quiet game with four catches for 55 yards. It's also the first game this season he did not have a touchdown.
The Florida-native is currently tied with with the most receiving touchdowns by an Ohio State freshman in a season. He caught his eighth TD grab last week, tying Carter's 1984 record. He is also three catches shy of breaking the freshman receptions record. And yes, that record is also currently held by Carter.
Ohio State did not need Smith's heroics on Saturday against Penn State. After a lackluster performance last week against Nebraska, the Buckeye run game got going again. Quinshon Judkins rushed for 95 yards on 14 carries and TreVeyon Henderson had 10 carries for 54 yards.
The Buckeyes head back home to Columbus and will face the Purdue Boilermakers at Ohio Stadium next Saturday.
