WHITEHOUSE, Ohio — If you attend an Anthony Wayne volleyball game, you will probably leave wondering why the word "Pike" will be stuck in your head as opposed to the proper volleyball term "spike."
That is because Mallory and Leah Pike are integral parts of the Generals volleyball program and recently helped lead the way to its first-ever state championship game.
“Honestly with your team supporting you on your back, that makes a big difference and we had our community in the stands and that was just amazing," Mallory said. "It means everything. I mean, as a little girl you always dream of winning a huge championship."
The team fought hard, but despite the countless serves and aces, the Generals fell in five sets to Cincinnati St. Ursula. Anthony Wayne claimed the state runner-up title.
“I think we could've just picked up on the little things," Leah said. We kind of just let go after the second set thinking we had it when we just needed to finish stronger."
"Definitely a learning experience, but I think we have a lot to be proud of," Mallory added. "Now that we all know how this feels I think that's just gonna bring momentum for our next postseason."
The sisters both committed to play volleyball at Ball State this past fall. But before they get to that next level, they look forward to a final senior season as Generals as the twins and fellow teammates know how much more they will accomplish.
"Most of all, I hope that these two right here can carry on what I was doing," senior libero and captain Ryan Dzierwa said. "Because feeling a group of people rely on you emotionally and feeling that trust, it's something really special."
