The Lake Flyers were hoping for a better 2023 season. The team went 2-8 in head coach Lane Bishop's first season leading the program.

"Year one was a struggle, but year two, with the kids that bought in, they've worked really hard all offseason," Bishop said. "The weight room, the numbers were great all season. The attendance here has been good in camps and now into two-a-days. Our kids have a sense of urgency about them and there's an excitement about the program, so I'm excited about year two."

Before taking the reins at Lake, Bishop was the offensive coordinator for Elmwood. The Royals' offenses under him won 10 games in 2021 and 12 games in 2022, respectively, with the latter appearing in a regional final.

"I think we have some young guys that are hungry for success," Bishop said. "Our seniors are ready to change the culture. I think that teams are going to be surprised when they see us. I think we're a bit more physical."

Lake is in the competitive Northern Buckeye Conference, having to face powerhouses including Oak Harbor and Eastwood. The Flyers return a majority of their starters on offense, including quarterback Carter Behlmer. The junior hopes to get off to a strong start this season.

"There's both excitment and stress coming off a rough season, trying build up a winning mentality now," Behlmer said. "Once we get a taste of winning, we'll get going and starting off strong is really the hardest part."

The Flyers open their season on the road at Leipsic.
