The Scott Bulldogs will try to prove themselves as one of the top teams in the City League this fall with the help of new head coach Rich Davis.

Davis has been known as the school's track coach for the last few years, but it's not like he doesn't have experience with football.

Davis played running back and returned kickoffs for the University of Toledo in the mid-2000s, taking the field alongside such Rocket greats as Bruce Gradkowski and Lance Moore. Davis says he's excited for the opportunity to lead guys on the gridiron in addition to the track.

"It's actually fun. That's what I like doing. I like developing these kids," Davis said. "Because there's a lot of talent and potential in them, and they just need somebody to bring that out of them. I actually enjoy bringing that out of them."

Davis will have a number of talented players filling out the roster, including junior Josiah Barnett, the younger brother of Daryl Barnett, Toledo City League Player of the Year the last two seasons, who is continuing his football career at the University of Toledo.

"We're just trying to work. Try as hard as we can to win," Barnett said. "Win a city championship, and try to go to state. With a new coach, and not having our old one and our star players from last year, we're trying to do even better."

Barnett will be joined by impact players like Daveion Pettaway, who's embracing their new coach Davis.

"Very, very enthusiastic. He has a fiery passion," Pettaway said. "I know what to expect out of him."

Scott opens its season on the road at Allen East. The Bulldogs' first home game is Aug. 30 when they host St. Francis.
