The Calvert Senecas are coming off one of their best seasons in years. They went 8-2 in the season, falling to Crestview in the first round of the playoffs. The Senecas started the season 8-0, making for the best for the program since 1999, before losing in the final game of the regular season to division champion Hopewell-Loudon.

"I think we were able to beat up on some teams that were worse than us," senior running back Cal Warnement said. "But this year, we want to bring it towards the end of the year and into the playoffs and actually get some big-time wins."

Head coach Steve Reser is gone from last year's team and replacing him is former Lakota Raiders head coach Mike Lento, who led his previous team to a 5-5 record in the regular season and qualified for the playoffs before falling in the first round to top-seeded Columbus Grove.

Lento acknowledged the majority of starters return from last year's talented team.

"Obviously we have some gaps to fill. They graduated some athletes," he said. "But, we also have a large amount of the guys returning, so, there are guys that are ready to step up and ready for their time."

Players say the transition to a new head coach and coaching style is both challenging and rewarding.

"He's made it really easy. He's intense. He gets us going," said senior Johnny Schumacher. "He knows how to reach a lot of us. But he's really pushing us. I think we're getting a lot better this year."
