Bowling Green High School halts hockey program this season

Bowling Green High School will not have a hockey program this year. In its history, the team has six state titles, but participation numbers are way down. BOWLING GREEN, OH (WTOL) - Bowling Green High School will not have a hockey program this year.

In its history, the team has six state titles, but participation numbers are way down this year. The last state title the Bobcats won was in 1999.

This will be the first time since 1978 that the school has not fielded a team.

The plan is to have the program back in a year, the school said, citing strong numbers at some of the younger levels.

"It's a rough go right now, but I'm very optimistic moving forward. In the '90s there were 450 kids in the youth programs. Late 2000s, (participation) dropped to 117. This year should be back to 350," said BG Athletic Director Dirk Conner.
