BGSU, head hockey coach Ty Eigner part ways

Eigner is out as Bowling Green's head hockey coach after five seasons at the helm.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green State University has parted ways with head hockey coach Ty Eigner, the school announced on Monday.

The separation comes after the Falcons finished the season 13-22-1 and ended the year with six straight losses. BGSU was swept in the CCHA Mason Cup Quarterfinals on Saturday.

In five seasons at the helm, Eigner led the Falcons to two winning seasons and no NCAA tournament appearances.

Eigner, a 1993 graduate of BGSU, was named the head coach in 2019 after spending the previous nine seasons as an assistant coach with the program.

Bowling Green's director of athletics, Derek van der Merwe, issued this statement on Monday:

BGSU Hockey has a rich history of achievement and success, and has positively impacted the experience of countless students, alumni, fans and supporters over generations.

The decision to separate from Coach Eigner was made after a thorough review and evaluation of our program over multiple years. These are never easy decisions to make, especially given Ty’s many years of service to the University. I would like to thank Ty and his family for their contributions and commitment to BGSU hockey, the University and the Bowling Green community, which represents a tenure of service as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach for the Falcons that has spanned a combined 19 seasons.

We will begin an immediate search for the next head coach to elevate our hockey program to prominence within the CCHA and nationally, and we are committed to working with our stakeholders across the country in creating this new trajectory.

In September 2023, Eigner was placed on administrative leave from the program due to an investigation into an alleged hazing incident.

BGSU found through an external, independent investigator that the alleged activities involving multiple student-athletes included underage drinking and provision of alcohol to those underage by older members of the BGSU hockey team. The investigation also found there was conduct with the potential to cause humiliation, physical harm or emotional harm.

The university said their review of the investigation, "suggests that no member of the BGSU hockey staff had any direct knowledge of the off-campus event." Eigner was then reinstated in October.
