WHITEHOUSE, Ohio — The celebration is on after Anthony Wayne boys golf brought home the program's first state championship the previous weekend.
"I don't know if it's completely set in on everyone," head coach Pat Phillips said.
The team took on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University and came out victorious with a tournament-low two-day team total of 598.
"It literally means everything," senior Myles Murphy said. "This has been the plan since we were kids."
The school beat out larger schools and powerhouses like Archbishop Hoban from Akron, Olentangy Liberty from the Columbus area and St. Xavier from Cincinnati.
"It just feels insane to actually achieve that," senior Logan Sutto said. "I don't even know, it's kind of a loss for words."
Sutto led all Generals with a two-day total of 136. He finished second individually, one stroke behind gold medalist Vaughn Harber from St. Francis DeSales of Columbus.
"It was our only goal for the last four years to win a state championship and it still feels out of this world to win that," senior Ian Briars said.
The Generals entered the second final day at No. 4, but had strong performances, including 66 from Sutto and 72 from sophomore Michael Distefano, to claim the title.
"It feels good," junior Ted Robertson said. "The whole year we knew a state title was what we wanted to win and we did this year."
It was the first OHSAA team sport state title won by the school since the softball program's 2003 state title.
"It's great," Distefano said. "We all put a lot of work over the offseason. It's great to see it all pay off."
The team will be recognized by the school before the start of the football team's home playoff game against Start. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
