Central Catholic girls basketball coach steps down due to family health issues

Corri Stanley's 4-year-old son was diagnosed with T-cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma less than two months after she was rehired as the head coach at Central Catholic.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Central Catholic High School girls basketball coach Corri Stanley has stepped down due to family health issues, the school announced Friday.

Corri Stanley's 4-year-old son, Colton, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma less than two months after she was rehired as the head coach at CCHS.

“It is with a heavy heart that I step down from my position as head coach of the Lady Irish basketball program,” Stanley said. “To say I was excited about returning to lead a program I care so much about is an understatement. Unfortunately, my family has faced a very difficult year. As we continue to face the challenges ahead, I know this is the right decision. My role as ‘Mom’ has never been more important.”

“Central Catholic is grateful for everything Corri has done for the school and especially Lady Irish basketball,” CCHS athletic director Greg Dempsey said. “Our prayers are with Colton, Corri, and her family as they continue on Colton's road to recovery.”

Dempsey said a search for Stanley’s replacement will begin immediately.

Stanley is an alum of Central Catholic and is a current teacher at the school. She was the head coach from 2014-20 before returning this past season as head coach.

During her first stint with the program, Stanley helped lead the Fighting Irish to two Three Rivers Athletic Conference championships and five district tournament appearances.

“The love I have for the Lady Irish basketball program, Central Catholic, Irish Athletics, and the entire Irish community has never been stronger,” Stanley said. “My family is so grateful for the amazing amount of love and support we continue to receive.”
