TOLEDO, Ohio — Professional wrestling fans have an opportunity to witness Championship International Wrestling in Toledo on Sunday.
The Midwest regional promotion's show is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at St. Clement Hall on Tremainsville Road. The main event will see Michael Elgin, known for his time in New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor, face off against reigning CIW Heavyweight Champion Malice for the belt.
Along with local Toledo talent like Kenny Urban, who brings a goose to his matches, CIW attracts overseas talent from countries as far away as Japan, too.
The Amish Assassins, a tag team from nearby Camden, Mich., will also feature on the show's card.
"Toledo is a legendary wrestling city," said CIW commentator Terry Sullivan. "I started in Toledo in the early '70s and came as a fan before that."
CIW got its start in 1991 and is now run by former National Wrestling Alliance champion Phil Monahan, formerly known as "Nitro" during his in-ring days.
"It's a big network, it's kind of like being in a mob," CIW president Phil Monahan said. "Once you're in you are in and that's how you find your talent."
His son, Kaiden "Big Country" Monahan, is part of the action among the CIW men and women competing between the ropes.
With organizations like WWE and All Elite Wrestling maintaining dominance over nationwide audiences, the people behind CIW made sure to remind fans that their shows are affordable and also provide family-fun entertainment.
"The phenomenal mix of old school wrestling with attitude paired with young guys who are up-and-comers," said CIW color commentator Chris Carter. "High flyers, fast action, it's great."
