'Leaving a Legacy': Springfield grad, USC commit Maira Scott holding track camp

The four-time state champ is hosting a free camp on July 20th at Springfield High School to teach kids the fundamentals of the sport.

HOLLAND, Ohio — Maira Scott had one of the best high school careers of any track athlete in northwest Ohio history.

The 2024 Springfield High School grad won four individual state titles in events such as the 100m and 200m dashes. By winning the 200m dash in 2023 and 2024, she became the first back-to-back state champion in school program history.

As one would expect, Scott became a highly sought-after recruit for big-name schools. Back in November, Scott committed to the University of Southern California to continue her track career.

"USC stood out to me because of their community, because of their diversity, and obviously very high academics," said Scott. "The Olympics will be there in 2028 so that's something I'm really looking forward to, but especially the sunshine. The coaches there really made me feel like I was at home and I fell in love with it. I couldn't really give up the opportunity."

Before Scott leaves for Los Angeles, she's imparting some of her wisdom on the next generation of athletes. Scott is holding the first annual 'Leave a Legacy' Youth Track & Field Camp on July 20th at Springfield High School.

The camp will feature Scott and other area track and field athletes, who will give instruction on the fundamentals of the sport to kids ages 6-15. Scott was inspired to host a camp to give back to kids after everything the Springfield community did for her.

"Springfield and the whole community has done so much for me," said Scott. "Making sure I leave my impact here, and being able to share my love for the sport, open up people's eyes and let them know [that] track and field is coming up and we need more people to enjoy it. To be able to experience track and field and meet other peers that love the sport and have been involved in the sport, since it's an Olympic year, to just spread light on the sport."

The camp is free to the public, and runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m at the Springfield High School track. Gates open at 8:15 a.m. Participants can pre-register by July 13th by emailing leavealegacytrack@gmail.com.
