Nine local girls qualify for state tennis tournament

The girls state tennis tournament at the College of Wooster is set for Thursday and Friday.

WOOSTER, Ohio — Nine local girls tennis players gathered Tuesday for media day at Twos Athletic Club in Toledo.

In division one, Maddie Peisley of Northview and Penelope Giammarco of Perrysburg qualified for singles this past weekend at the district tournament in Port Clinton.

"I'm really excited because it's playing the best in the state, but definitely the nerves are there for sure," Peisley said. "I'm just gonna hope for the best you know playing against the best people. I am excited to represent northwest Ohio."

Mara Boyd, Cora Langenderfer, Mallory Rettig and Emily Szul of Anthony Wayne also qualified in division one for doubles.

The pairs of Boyd and Langenderfer and Rettig and Szul are the first doubles teams Anthony Wayne has ever sent to a state competition.

"It's amazing and it really exciting," Boyd said. "It shows that hard work really does pay off and good things come to those who work hard and take this sport seriously."

Division two also had a few qualifiers as Mari-Yona Shannon of Maumee Valley Country Day and the duo of Bryn Tangemen and Catherine Rhegness of Ottawa Hills will be featured as well.

"I was really just trying to play my best the entire time," Shannon said. "The fact that I made it to state is really nice. I hope this experience helps me a lot and is a launch point to the different things I'm able to do."

The state tournament will take place Thursday and Friday at the College of Wooster.
