WHITEHOUSE, Ohio — The Anthony Wayne girls basketball team looks to be one of the best in the state of Ohio this season. The Generals return multiple starters from last year and are looking to get back to state as they did in 2022.
"A strong core coming back, and a good group of younger players that are joining them," head coach Jami Carter said. "Obviously, a lot of sisters."
Not just sisters; the Generals have not one, not two, not three, but four sets of twins in the program: first years Lauren and Laila Brennemen; sophomores Addison and Kennedie Hill, and Leah and Mallory Pike; and juniors Elise and Brooke Bender make up almost half the roster.
"It definitely helps having twins on the team, because you always know how to play with each other," Brooke Bender said. "And then we learn from other twins who know how to play with each other too. So it always just works out very well for us."
The Hills said that playing with each other makes predicting the others' game easier.
"I feel like we know each other's first move, or what they're going to do next," Kennedie Hill said.
Having this many dynamic duos on the team can come with its own challenges, both for the team and for opponents.
"It's definitely different than other teams," Mallory Pike said. "That's what's unique about us. We got used to it now, and it's not that big a deal."
The twins said that teams game planning against the Generals can sometimes get them confused.
"Some of them get us mixed up on the court," Laila Brenneman said. "I think it's funny."
But Carter thinks having multiple sets of twins also comes with its own rewards.
"They're great kids so we love to be around them," Carter said. "They work hard. They're competitive. Every day in the gym is an experience."
Another member of the girls program, first-year Gabby Gibbons, is also a twin. Her brother Grant is on the boys team.
