Here's what life was like in 1957, the last time the Lions won the NFL championship

DETROIT — The Detroit Lions are in unprecedented territory, standing one win away from advancing to their first-ever Super Bowl. 

But the Lions had played for the NFL championship before it was called the Super Bowl. The last time? 1957. Detroit has not returned to the championship game since then.

A win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday would end one of the longest current championship droughts in professional sports.

Life around the world was certainly a lot different 67 years ago. Here's what it looked like:

Gas prices

According to the Department of Energy, the average price of gas in 1957 was 30 cents a gallon.

Top song

Billboard magazine's top song based on retail sales in 1957 was "All Shook Up" by Elvis Presley. In March of the same year, Presley purchased Graceland for $102,500.

Top TV show

The top show on television in 1957 was Gunsmoke starring James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, Milburn Stone as Doc and Amanda Blake as Kitty.

Other sports champions

In the MLB, the Milwaukee Braves defeated the New York Yankees, 4-3 to win the World Series. 

In basketball, the Boston Celtics beat the St. Louis Hawks to win their first NBA title.

On the ice, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins, 4-1, to win the NHL Stanley Cup.

At the college level, Ohio State and Auburn are recognized as national champions in football, and North Carolina beat Wilt Chamberlain's Kansas Jayhawks for the NCAA basketball championship.

Historical world events

The 34th president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, began his second term in January.

In October 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite, into orbit and kicked off the Space Age.
