DETROIT — University of Toledo football’s Quinyon Mitchell was selected No. 22 by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Mitchell was in attendance at the draft in Detroit and walked the stage to shake hands with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after hearing his name called.
The star cornerback becomes the first Rockets player since defensive end Dan Williams in 1993 to be picked in the first round of the draft.
Mitchell, a Florida native, shot up draft boards after two seasons landing on All-America teams, and strong showings in the Senior Bowl and NFL scouting combine. He was Toledo’s second player ever to be named to a major All-America team in multiple years.
Mitchell led the nation in 2022 with 20 pass breakups and was second in the country in 2023 with 18 pass breakups.
He is also the first UT player ever to be named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player.
Since 2017, Toledo has had nine players drafted. Most recently, defensive lineman Desjuan Johnson was selected with the final pick of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.
