WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - Monday was a big day for Washington Township. It was the first day the station was staffed during business hours.
Washington Township Fire Department kicked off their new schedule of having two full-time employees, working Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The assistant chief says he and his crew are excited about the new addition.
This move comes after struggling to find volunteer firefighters, especially during the day. The issue also resulted in delayed response times. To fix the problem, the department asked voters last fall to support a levy to add daytime staffing.
The voters supported the idea and now more emergency help is in the community.
?"The biggest thing is we have an immediate response for EMS calls,” said Assistant Chief Moe Collins. “Those two people are in the station. Whatever they're doing they'll stop, they'll get in the ambulance, they'll respond to the call. They'll be backed up by, of course, our paid-per-call people and Lucas County Life Squad."
The assistant chief says staffing late afternoons and overnights has not been an issue for the department, so their paid-per-call people will still respond to those calls.
