Birchaven is but one entity in Blanchard Valley Health Association's Continuing Care Services Division. By being part of a local non-profit healthcare system, we are able to serve a multitude of needs under one roof. Patients can benefit from the following services.
You will discover Birchaven Heights offers a variety of residences to meet your needs. You may choose from spacious one or two bedroom apartments that range in size from 672 square feet to 1,092 square feet. Wall–to-wall carpeting, central air, roomy closets, and fully equipped kitchens are standard features. For added convenience most apartments offer a washer and dryer, as well as porches or balconies. Garages are also available. Our most sought after apartments feature a living room with a turret.
Birchaven Heights allows you to enjoy the lifestyle that suits you best. A full calendar of activities and social events includes: recreational programs, excursions to local and regional attractions; and speakers and seminars. This attractive life-style frees you from the daily chores of maintaining a home. Finally, at Birchaven Heights you will find the security of a caring and supportive staff.

There are times when illness or injury necessitates special care and supervision. Our multidisciplinary team of nurses; speech, occupational and physical therapists work together to provide unsurpassed nursing and restorative care. Certified Therapists take a special interest in those recovering from stroke by providing Neuro Developmental Treatment. Our ultimate goal is returning the patient to their highest level of functioning.
We offer both private and semi-private rooms for comfort and privacy. Individualized programs add the perfect blend of professional care and friendly atmosphere. Whether your stay is a short or long one, the quality care provided in our designated skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities makes the difference.
Birchaven's comprehensive rehabilitation services are offered on Main Street. Services include:

Birchaven's long term nursing care stands well above the rest because of our unique neighborhood concept. Each neighborhood consists of only 17 private or semi-private rooms. All semi-private rooms are separated by a half-wall to add greater privacy. Each room has its own window providing a view of the beautifully landscaped outdoors. There are four cozy dining rooms each with their own fireplace. The special serving kitchens allow residents to enjoy the smells of home including bread and cookies while they bake.
At Birchaven we believe that each individual is unique with distinct values and a life story. Our professional staff provides a comprehensive plan to meet the needs of each resident medically, socially, and spiritually. Our staff treats each resident with compassionate individualized care.
While many tenants of Birchaven will never need long term care, some will. Planning in advance by choosing Birchaven will assure access to a full range of services in our health center.
For those individuals living with memory impairments, our Schaefer Care Center offers a secure, home-like environment with activities to engage the mind and body. Resident rooms decorated with personal belongings provide a familiar, comforting setting. A beautifully landscaped garden complete with paths and seating, encourage walking and visiting. Alcoves and a special dining room provide families with a private home-like setting for conversation or celebration of an event. Our programming is the result of extensive research.
Information gathered from our research justified our new therapeutic approach consisting of three key elements:

Take a leisurely stroll down historic "Main Street" while listening to music, or the train whistle that lets you know it's time for dinner. You and your family will enjoy gathering in the local diner, reading in our library or browsing the gift shop for that special present. You may pamper yourself in the beauty/barber shop, or workout in the exercise gym. You may even visit the Chapel for a moment of spiritual reflection. All the conveniences of your hometown are at each doorstep on Main Street.
In addition, Main Street houses adult day center and child day care in conjunction with the University of Findlay's Intergenerational Studies Program.
Birchaven's Health Services Network offers a wide range of personal assistance and health care services, all of which are available to residents of Birchaven Retirement Village and the greater community.
Home Health is a very popular and practical option for older adults who want to stay at home and live as independently as possible. Our skilled staff, advanced technology and individual/family education and involvement are the hallmark of our home health program. Your physician is directly involved in determining the home health services that best fit your needs. Services may include:
- Registered Nurses providing intermittent skilled nursing care
- Medical Social Workers
- Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies
For individuals with terminal illnesses, when curative measures are no longer being pursued, Hospice Care provides a residential setting along with supportive and clinical services for residents and their families. A special unit within Birchaven has been designed for hospice patients and their families.
Hospice enables residents to prepare for death with dignity, privacy and control of personal circumstances. Residents' benefit from pain and symptom management, health care services and emotional and spiritual support.
Looking for additional care and support within your home? Nurses, nursing assistants and companions provide personal care, help with light household chores, laundry and routine errands. Assistance is available to Birchaven residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Adult day services provide a safe, supportive and enriching environment to those adults who need special services in a secure and caring environment. The Adult Day Center serves to: Maintain an individual's maximum level of independence; and Provide respite, support and education to caregivers and families of participants.
Our structured program offers recreation, physical exercise, involvement with children through our intergenerational program, and socialization and mental stimulation. Regularly scheduled activities include music and pet therapy, field trips, puzzles, crafts, nutrition day, current events, memory walks, table games and bingo.
The Center is available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. A hot meal is included. Transportation is available through the Community Action Commission.
