PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - Brian Hoeflinger was an 18-year-old Ottawa Hills senior with a bright future. The golfer and honors student had recently been accepted to the University of North Carolina to attend college.
But on the night of February 2, 2013, he made a decision that changed the lives of many. He drove after drinking, and died in a car crash.
His parents, Cindy and Brian Hoeflinger, admit they were ignorant to the thought that their son was drinking alcohol. They say many parents do the same, and are speaking out to change that.
The Hoeflingers have spoken with parents from several area schools, including Perrysburg parents Tuesday night. Their message is always the same: it's time to open people's eyes and start a conversation with your kids about the dangers of teen drinking.
"There are people listening and I think it's opened a dialogue for people," they said. "We're going to talk about this; we're going to be in your face. We love you and we don't want to see anything happen to you."
