Tiffin City Schools approve school resource officer

Tiffin is the next school district that will be adding an armed police officer in their school building. After multiple meeting on the topic over the Summer, Tiffin City Schools has reached an agreement with the city of Tiffin to employ a School Resource Officer beginning this upcoming school year.

TIFFIN, OH (WTOL) - Tiffin is the next school district that will be adding an armed police officer in their school building.

After multiple meetings on the topic over the summer, Tiffin City Schools finally reached an agreement with the city of Tiffin to employ a School Resource Officer beginning this upcoming school year.

The district will pay for 87 percent of the officer's salary in 2019, then 75 percent for the remaining four years of the contract.

The officer will primarily be stationed within Tiffin Columbian High School or the district's middle school building.

The RSO is not the only thing being added, as the district has worked on developing a student well-being plan that includes mental health resources, elementary school counselors, and a school district social worker.

And the officers presence is intended to bring more than safety for the students here.

"The added benefit would be that this is just another support for our students, someone else that they can go to. Someone else that is going to be in our buildings to build relationships with these kids that they may not have that type of relationship or understanding of what a police officer really is," said Robert Boes, Assistant Superintendent at Tiffin City Schools.

Tiffin City Schools begin their school year next week, and administration hopes to have the new School Resource Officer in place by September 1.
