Toledo Walleye raise money for TFD, honor firefighters

The Toledo Walleye will be paying tribute to Toledo's fallen heroes.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Toledo Walleye will be paying tribute to Toledo's fallen heroes. Before the start of Friday's game at the Huntington Center, the team will observe a moment of silence to remember and honor Stephen Machcinski and James Dickman.

The players will also wear special TFRD decals on their helmets, which will be worn for the rest of the season.

"Even in Evansville they did a ceremony for the guys that passed away," said Captain Kyle Rogers. "It's amazing how much support people give these firefighters. It's just that time, you take a second to think about what we have and not take it for granted."

The players have signed two jerseys, which will be raffled off Friday and Saturday, to benefit the Toledo Fire and Rescue Foundation.

"Your heart goes out to the firefighters and the families of the firefighters who lost their lives," said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. "I love my job, I come to work every day, but at no point during the day do I ever fear losing my life. I can't imagine doing that, and these people in those services do that every single day

The team will also be wearing special St. Patrick 's Day green jerseys on March 15, and the game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds also to benefit the Toledo Fire and Rescue Foundation.
