WAUSEON, OH (Toledo News Now) - A new mayor took the oath of office Monday night in Wauseon. History was made when Kathy Huner was sworn in as the first female mayor in the city's history. Huner is also the first Latina/o mayor in the state of Ohio.

The torch was passed from former Mayor Doug Shaw to Huner at Monday's city council meeting.

“I'm very excited, very honored that I was chosen by my peers on council,” Huner said. “I've been on council for 13 years, so for this to happen has been amazing for me.”

Huner will finish the last year of Shaw's term. Shaw decided to step down and retire from politics to focus on his clothing business.

“She'll do a good job. She has a lot of years' experience being on council, so it's nothing new to her,” Shaw said of Huner. “It'll be a good transition for her.”
