City of Toledo reconsidering 3 planned roundabouts to allow 'further review and community engagement'

TOLEDO, Ohio — There is a change of plans for three roundabout projects in the city of Toledo — at least, for now.

The proposed roundabouts were included in future projects at three Toledo intersections: Kenwood Boulevard and Secor Road; Central and Detroit avenues; and Main Street and Starr Avenue.

But those roundabouts are now on pause, the city of Toledo announced Friday.

"We have heard the concerns from residents and members of City Council regarding the proposed locations of these roundabouts," the city said in a statement. "As a result, we have decided to pause these plans to allow for further review and community engagement."

The road improvement projects at Kenwood Boulevard and Secor Road, and Main Street and Starr Avenue, will both move forward while the roundabout plans are paused.

For the Secor Road reconstruction project, the project will now include "a traditional intersection with a u-turn instead of the proposed roundabout."

A "traditional intersection" replaces a roundabout for the Main Street and Starr Avenue project, which is part of planned improvements to the Front Street and Main Street corridor.

The project for Central and Detroit avenues has been canceled, according to the city.

"Roundabouts remain an important part of Toledo’s future infrastructure planning, but we recognize the need for greater public understanding and dialogue around these projects," the city's statement said. "Our next step will focus on education and outreach to ensure that residents have the information they need to understand the benefits of roundabouts and how they fit into our broader transportation strategy."

The city encouraged residents to provide feedback on roundabouts through its "Roundabout Community Pulse" survey and pop quiz at this link.
