SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol Milan Post is investigating a fatal crash that killed one person and took place on the Ohio Turnpike near Rice Township.
Police say a white Western Star semi-tractor trailer was traveling eastbound in the center lane, drove off the left side, struck the wall, and overturned. The trailer separated from the tractor, then went left of center over the wall, and came to rest blocking all three eastbound lanes, according to police.
Troopers say the semi-tractor continued along the median and came to rest striking a bridge pillar.
The driver of the Western Star was identified as 53-year-old Roy Cooper of Columbiaville, Michigan. He was alone in the truck and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.
It is unknown if drug or alcohol use contributed to the crash and the incident is still under investigation.
The Ohio State Patrol was assisted on scene by Harris-Elmore Fire and EMS, Sandusky Township Fire and EMS, The Ohio Turnpike Maintenance Department, and Madison Motor Services Towing.
Traffic was maintained to one lane in both directions while the crash was under investigation.
