Ohio State Highway Patrol officials released a report Tuesday totaling the number of roadway incidents, including fatalities, that occurred over the New Year's holiday weekend.
The report only includes incidents in the state of Ohio from Friday, Dec. 30 at 12 a.m. to Monday, Jan. 2 at 11:59 p.m. During this four-day period, there were 11 roadway fatalities. The fatal crashes occurred in Cuyahoga, Summit, Columbiana, Gallia, Hamilton and Montgomery counties.
This is down from 2021-2022 New Year reporting period, during which OSHP recorded 12 roadway fatalities. During the 2020-2021 New Year, there were 14 reported fatalities, while in the 2019-2020 reporting period, there were only four.
In the 2022-2023 reporting weekend, seatbelts were not worn in eight of the 11 fatalities and impairment was involved in six of the fatal incidents.
Statewide, OSHP reported a total of 390 crashes, a 15.4% decrease from 461 crashes in the previous reporting period.
Additionally, troopers issued 214 OVIs and cited 67 drivers for distracted driving. Reported OVIs saw a decrease from the previous year, while distracted driving saw an increase.
The Ohio counties with the highest number of total incidents, which include crashes, drug use and safety belt use, among others, were Franklin, Clermont and Trumbull counties.
