LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — UPDATE: The Norfolk Southern railroad crossings at Holland Sylvania Road and Holloway Road reopened Thursday morning, according to the Lucas County Engineer's Office.

Crews have now moved to the Crissey Road crossing, and the engineer's office said in a post on social media that they were told the work should take no more than two days.

The Wilkins Road crossing will also require repairs, however, the county engineer's office has not received a work schedule for that closure yet.

In a statement sent Thursday, a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern addressed the lengthy closure beyond the initial two-day estimate at Holland Sylvania Road:

"That crossing was closed for track maintenance and was reopened this morning. Our goal for reopening crossings when we have to perform maintenance work is usually to get them reopened within a couple days but sometimes work gets delayed or takes longer than expected. We appreciate the community’s patience as our teams worked to complete this important maintenance safely."

The previous report is below:

Despite an initial two-day closure for repairs, a Norfolk Southern railroad crossing remains closed nearly a week later in Springfield Township.

The Lucas County Engineer's Office addressed the situation in a social media post Wednesday afternoon.

The post is a follow up to a road closure alert from last Wednesday regarding the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing on Holland Sylvania Road between Airport Highway and Angola Road.

The initial alert described the Norfolk Southern project as a two-day closure for railroad repair starting July 25 and part of the railroad's ongoing maintenance in our area.

However, nearly a week later, the crossing remains closed and the Lucas County Engineer's Office wanted to give an update although the repairs are a Norfolk Southern project.

"This is not our work, so we are not in control of the work schedule," the Lucas County Engineer's Office said in Wednesday's update. "We have been in communication with the railroad’s contractor daily but their work schedule is changing daily."

Additionally, the railroad crossing in the village of Holland on Holloway Road and Clark Street is also closed. Notification of that closure was only received after it closed Tuesday, according to the county engineer's office. It is unclear when either crossing will reopen.

"We apologize for all this confusion as we know it’s not very comforting but we wanted you to know what the current situation is as you deserve that," the county engineer's office said. "We will reach back out to the contractor and the railroad tomorrow morning to see if we can get another update."

The recommended detour is to use Airport Highway and Angola Road to Reynolds Road, according to the post.
