UPDATE | Pedestrian struck by vehicle, killed Wednesday morning on US 24

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office closed a portion of the road Wednesday morning.

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — Editor's note: The following story has been updated to reflect new information made available by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office announced a pedestrian was killed in a traffic incident on Telegraph Road/US 24 near Carleton Rockwood Road Wednesday morning.

In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, authorities said a 55-year-old female pedestrian was killed when she was struck by a Kenworth tractor, gravel-train combination at approximately 4:54 a.m. According to the sheriff's office, the woman was walking southbound in the middle of the right lane of travel wearing all dark clothing at the time of the incident.

The woman was struck and came to rest on the west side gravel shoulder of Telegraph Road, according to authorities. Per the press release, the tractor trailer stopped on the northbound shoulder of the right travel lane of Telegraph Road after crossing the centerline in an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian.

Emergency crews pronounced the pedestrian deceased on the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the incident. Officials said speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.

Authorities are withholding the name of the deceased pending notifying family.

Crews responded to the scene at approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday. A portion of the road was closed due to the crash.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., crews reopened the road.
