LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — If you’re heading to the Lake Erie Islands, Cedar Point, Cleveland, or just taking a simple day trip to do some birding in the Howard Marsh area, you may need to build in a bit more time for your travel.
State Route 2 will be closed through much of the spring just west of the Bono Curve for a major construction project according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Crews are working to replace the bridge that goes over Cedar Creek in Jerusalem Township.
The project began earlier this week and has Route 2 closed between Teachout and Donovan roads.
It isn't expected to be finished until late May.
As a detour, ODOT suggests: SR 2 to SR 579 to SR 51 to SR 2 or I-280 heading westbound and I-280/SR 2 to SR 51 to SR 579 to SR 2 heading eastbound.
ODOT says it will cost a little more than a million dollars to replace the aging bridge which will come entirely from district preservation funds.
The new bridge will be of similar design but about four feet shorter.
Kelsie Hoagland, with ODOT says the bridge, built in 1952, needs to be replaced due to the condition of the substructure and ground that it's resting on.
The new bridge will be a single span prestressed concrete box beam bridge with a span of 88' 6"with a reinforced concrete deck.
