Intersection of Summit and Cherry streets in Toledo set for new construction project

Drivers beware, this project will slow traffic down until at least early next year.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A heads up for people who drive in downtown Toledo. For the third time in six years, a section of Summit Street is about to be closed for construction beginning Monday and it's expected to last for months.

Here's a map to give you a better idea of what this will look like:

Summit Street will be closed from Jackson Street to Cherry Street in both directions, and Cherry Street will be down to one lane from Superior Street down to the MLK bridge in both directions.

Christy Soncrant, the commissioner of the city's engineering and construction management, said this is all covered through safety money from ODOT. She said the work will be a full reconstruction, focused on beautification and safety efforts by adding crosswalks and medians with trees and flowers.

This will mark the third time Summit Street has seen construction in the last six years.

Soncrant said while this project will be complete close to the start of 2025, that's only the first phase of construction.

"This phase one will last through mid-January. We plan to be done with this by mid-January," Soncrant said. "Now if we have a winter like last year, then we'll do phase two, which is the other half of the intersection, right away which will be completed July 1."

Signs placed around Summit Street say the closure starts Saturday, Aug. 24 and runs through November, but Soncrant said that's inaccurate.

The closure is set to start in the early morning of Monday, Aug. 26 and will run through at least January.
