MAUMEE, Ohio — A backup on I-475 southbound due to a scheduled traffic switch is expected to last throughout Sunday and the Ohio Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to avoid the interstate.

The backup is due to a scheduled traffic switch and ramp closures on I-475 southbound, which had been originally planned for Saturday but was delayed a day because of rain, according to ODOT.

"There was too much wetness on the new lanes to successfully stripe, so it was moved to today. Each of the southbound exits on/off are closed at Dussel and at US 24, and those southbound ramps at Airport will be closing shortly," ODOT District 2 spokesperson Kelsey Hoagland said. "All southbound on/off ramps will then remain closed until the switch is complete. Congestion and backups are absolutely expected for the duration of the day and motorists are encouraged to seek an alternate route to avoid the interstate.”

During the shift, ODOT said that ramp closures "could last more than an hour at a time, multiple times."

ODOT said the traffic switch is expected to be complete by midnight.

Following the switch, southbound and northbound will remain two lanes in each direction while other work is completed, with three lanes still expected to open in 2024.
