2 Wood Co. teenagers killed in crash caused by vehicle malfunction

A vehicle equipment malfunction caused a Jeep Grand Cherokee to veer off the road and strike a tree in Bloom Twp. Both 18-year-old occupants died at the scene.

WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — The Wood County Sheriff's Office issued a release on Friday following a double fatal crash that occurred in Bloom Township, located in southern Wood County. 

Officers responded to the crash around 6:45 p.m. on July 17, on Jerry City Rd. west of the Bloomdale Rd. intersection, not far from Elmwood High School. 

The initial report from the investigation determined that a Jeep Grand Cherokee had been traveling east bound when it suffered a major vehicle equipment malfunction. The vehicle veered off the roadway and to the south, flipping once before striking a tree and coming to a stop. 

The two 18-year-old occupants were found still inside the Jeep. Brendan Essex of Bloomdale and Michael Borsos of Bradner were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Wood County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
